Places to stay near Grand Teton National Park (Wyoming)

Posted on July 19, 2021August 9, 2022 by horsepoor4evercampingandtrails

This is a quick list of USFS trailheads & campgrounds:

There aren’t any developed horse campgrounds within park boundaries. They skirt the park on USFS land.

The trailheads/campgrounds within close driving distance to trailheads for the classic GTNP rides (Cascade Canyon, Paintbrush Canyon, String Lake, Leigh Lake, Two Ocean Lake Loop, Hermitage Point, etc) are on the eastern side of Jackson Lake.

The ones on the west are beautiful, but do not access the classic GTNP rides. Included here for reference because people tend to refer to them as GTNP.

Probably missing a few. Hey it’s a start.

Turpin Meadow Campground

Bridger-Teton National Forest, Forest Road 30066, Moran, WY 83013

GPS coordinates 43.85599 -110.26463

  • Trail Access: South Buffalo Trail, North Fork Buffalo trail, numerous more
  • Amenities: corrals, hitching posts, water access, a stock tank, accessibility to bear boxes, dumpsters, and a game storage pole.
  • USFS Link https://www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/btnf/recarea/?recid=71517

Turpin Meadow campground is located approximately 14 miles east of Grand Teton National Park’s Moran Entrance Station in Bridger Teton National Forest. There are corrals at the overflow parking and the trailhead. Both have a water trough. The trailhead and overflow areas are much more open. Cost is $12 per night at the main campground, overflow and trailhead.

There are 14 back in camp sites and 4 pull through. Two (one back in and one pull through) sites have hitching rails. Water is available at hydrants located near Site #11 and Site #15. I noticed that all of the camp spots are lined with large rocks. This may cause difficulty for those who trailer tie horses at camp.

USFS website states there is no water provided. However, I saw a stock tank and a spigot with a notice signs “Warning, water contains high levels of fluoride, PH and sodium” IDK if it is safe to drink or not.
